Can a Fixer Upper in Marin be a Tenant's Path to Homeownership?
Here I am, standing in my warm and cozy home today while it’s cold and unpleasant outside. My dogs are relaxed and my daughter’s watching a movie, and I came into the kitchen to tell you a story about this house. My name is Christopher Barrow, and I am the broker at Foundation Homes.
Buying Property Without Thinking about Cosmetics
Before we bought this house, my wife and I saw 75 other homes. When we walked into this one, the fumigation tenant had only been removed for five hours. So, you can imagine how the place looked and smelled. There was sawdust all over the floors, and there was wood paneling everywhere. We were surprised and a little frightened at the ugly wallpaper, and the previous owner left a wood laminate flooring in the hall that we thought was horrendous. The front yard was a mess and the back yard was an even bigger mess.
This was nobody’s dream home.
Seeing Real Estate Potential and Having a Vision
The house was awful and we had seen a lot of other homes that were much prettier and in better shape.
But, my wife and I saw an opportunity with this particular property, and we shared a vision of how we could create something we loved in this space.
It took some time, but over the course of two years, we turned a run-down house with two bedrooms and two bathrooms into a beautiful home with three bedrooms and an office. There are two-and-a-half bathrooms and we upgraded the back yard and the front yard. We made it a nice place that we are grateful to call home. We love this house.
Why Buy: Creating Memories and Earning Money
Our daughter has had birthday parties in this home, and we have had a lot of Christmas mornings here that made us happy and brought us closer. There are lots of memories in this house, and that’s what a house does – it gives you a space to make memories with the people you love.
At Foundation Homes, we want everyone to have this opportunity. Even if you’re happy renting and you thought you’d never be someone who buys, we’d like to think about the joy that can come with creating memories in your own home and sharing your own vision for what a property can become. We want you to embrace and benefit from this part of the American Dream.
If you have not thought about homeownership previously, you need to realize that it’s a huge wealth-building opportunity. You can buy something at a great price that may not be your dream home, but you can take the time and put in the work to make it your dream home. The important thing is that you get started.
We’re inviting you to complete the survey in this email. Then, please schedule an appointment with me to talk about your goals and develop a strategy to help you get where you want to be in the next year, five years, and even 10 years.
